BB Book Club | March's Book Is...

broadcast liam brown book club

I can't believe it's time to announce our third BB book club read already!

I originally had a short story collection in mind for my first book club pick however after January and February's titles both fell under this umbrella I decided to mix things up for March's selection and settled on something a little different; Liam Brown's Broadcast.

Back in November last year Ria and I took a trip to Libreria in Shoreditch and spent a little time browsing the shelves (and sheltering from the rain!) in search of book club inspiration. Drawn in by the promise of “Black Mirror meets Inception in the YouTube age” Ria plucked Broadcast off the shelf and passed it to me, declaring it sounded like 'my kind of book'. Of course, after 5+ years of running a book blog together Ria knows what she's talking about and after taking a quick look at the intriguing blurb (and striking cover design) I decided to buy a copy.

The idea behind MindCast is simple. We insert a small chip into your skull and then every thought, every feeling, every memory is streamed live, twenty-four hours a day. Trust me - within a few months you'll be the most talked about person on the planet.

So what's the book about?

According to the blurb, Broadcast follows vlogger David Callow who is offered the chance to star in a new online show, quickly becoming a huge celebrity and leading him to rethink his decision to share his life with the world. Commenting on social media culture, it sounds like the story is set to get pretty dark as David rebels against MindCast and discovers more about the person or people behind this truly terrifying idea.

Although I wanted to dive in and find out more back when I bought the book I also knew that it was a strong book club contender and at just shy of 200 pages Broadcast fits our theme of 'short stories' perfectly (online listings all seem to say the book has 288 pages but my copy definitely has 195!). The book had been sitting quietly on my bedside table for a few months although I have to confess I pre-read it earlier this month (twice!) in order to plan some related content. Of course, I won't give anything away other than to say I really enjoyed it and I hope you will too!

If you decide to join in with the BB Book Club this month you can let us know your thoughts on the book by completing this Google form by 23rd March. You can also use the hashtag #bookshelfbookclub to share your book photos and thoughts with us.

No matter where in the world you're based, you can pick up a copy of Broadcast over on The Book Depository, or head to your local library.

I hope that you're excited to read our March selection but don't worry if it doesn't sound like your thing - check back next month for Kelly's first book club pick!

Book Club | June 2020 Roundup

Our theme for June's book club was to read a book written by an author with the same initals as you. Here are a selection of the books chosen by Team BB and our readers...

The Other Alcott by Elise Hooper

"The Other Alcott tells the story of Little Women author Louisa May Alcott's younger sister May, an aspiring artist and the inspiration behind Amy March. I picked up this book, having read Little Women earlier this year, as I thought that the concept was really interesting and whilst I enjoyed the idea of May trying to find her own voice and chasing her dream to become a successful artist, sadly, on the whole, the book just wasn't for me. Having said that, I found the author's note explaining how she came to tell this particular story and which parts were inspired by real events/people etc, an interesting addition." - Erin

I found it really tricky finding a book to match this month's Book CLub theme - an author who shares your initials. Apparently there aren't too many A-Ks out there. But I settled on a book I've been meaning to read for a while (the joys of book club!): These Broken Stars, by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Are you joining us for Blogger's Bookshelf Book Club this month? What are you reading? - Anjali (@anjalikay) You can find the link to the June Book Club post on the blog in our profile. ---------- #bookstagram #bookbloggers #bookclub #bloggersbookshelf #instabooks #reading #bookcovers #prettybooks #beautifulbooks #booklovers #shareyourbooks #books #bookworm #readingchallenge #bbloggersbookclub #thesebrokenstars

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

"Like I mentioned in the above Instagram post on Blogger's Bookshelf, I really struggled to find my initials this month! Luckily, I remembered I had These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman (and Meagan Spooner, but her initials don't match mine) on my shelf which I was keen to read. I've had it for a while now, so it was a joy to finally have an excuse to pick it up (not that I should have needed one, but you know, so many books). Overall I did really enjoy it! Science Fiction usually isn't my jam as a book genre, but I found it really worked for this book and I want to read the next ones now!" - Anjali

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

"Joining the rest of the book community wanting to reread Twilight before Midnight Sun came out. It’s been I think around 10 years since I read it so I don’t really remember all the storyline. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it although that was very much ignoring the whole Edwards a creepy stalker... have talked for like 3 days ‘Bella you are my life now’ what a weight on your shoulders!" - Sophie

Book Club | One Year Of #BookshelfBookClub & Our Plans For 2019

bloggers bookshelf book club 2018

Just over a year ago we shared a post announcing that we were going to be starting our very own Blogger's Bookshelf online book club. Over the past twelve months, following the theme of 'short stories' we've read 13 amazing titles and if you've joined us along the way we hope you've enjoyed them too! With 2018 shortly coming to an end, and our final book club pick of the year all wrapped up we thought it might be fun to share a few stats from the past twelve months...

Over the year we had thirteen different titles featured as part of our book club.

The most popular book club picks were Tales Of The Peculiar by Ransom Riggs (January), About A Boy by Nick Hornby (October) and Dash & Lily's Book Of Dares (October).

Ten of our twelve picks were published between 2010 and 2018. The oldest book we read was Carmilla, which was first published in 1872.

Seven of the books were short story collections and five were novels or novellas.

Our theme for the year was 'short stories' but the longest book we read was A Tyranny Of Petticoats (354 pages) and the shortest was The Skeleton's Holiday (48 pages).

As part of the book club we read works by over 35 different authors!

Now you may be wondering whether we'll be continuing with the book club in 2019... and the answer is yes, although we're switching up the format! For 2019, instead of us selecting specific books we will instead be sharing a list of twelve bookish prompts and tackling one each month throughout the year. We'll be sharing the books we'll be reading along with some extra suggestions to help you choose if you would like to join in too!

Check back here on Thursday 27th December for further details and a printable featuring all of the our chosen prompts!

BB Book Club | January 2018 Roundup | Tales Of The Peculiar

This year we decided to launch our very own online book club, with a new book for you to join us in reading every month. We were so pleased to receive such a positive response to our new venture and would like to thank everyone who picked up a copy of January's selection Tales Of The Peculiar by Ransom Riggs. The short story collection proved very popular with you guys and we've put together an infographic to share a little bit more about your thoughts on the book!

January book club infographic tales of the peculiar ransom riggs

 Reader's comments & favourite quotes:

"I really enjoyed this book. It was a great addition to Ransom Riggs' other stories, and a fun read even if you haven't read the series before. I love all the creative abilities and peculiar talents that Riggs comes up with for his stories. The illustrations in this book were definitely a beautiful addition." - Sophie @ Sofilly

She felt the lonely burden of strangeness from the time she was old enough to hold up her head.

"I really enjoyed this collection of short stories and felt it was a great first book club pick! I loved the unique settings and characters as well as the beautiful illustrations. Tales Of The Peculiar has encouraged me to read the original series/more of Ransom Riggs writing in future." - Erin @ A Natural Detour

"It is a fun and exciting read. It is perfect for dipping your toe into the Peculiar world or exploring it in more detail if you are already a fan." - Kelly @ This Northern Gal

"Once upon a peculiar time..."

"I would definitely recommend the book as a great quick read. It's great for both those who are familiar with the world of the Peculiars and those (like me) who may only know it through the movie or have never read any of Ransom Riggs' novels. I really loved how dark some of the stories went and the style reminded me so much of the original Brothers Grimm fairytales." - Ria @ Thoroughly Modern Millennial

"I would recommend this book. I enjoyed the short stories, the illustrations and also the occasional editors notes. Some of the stories were fascinating and took turns that you couldn’t predict." - Cat

Thank you to everyone who joined in with our first ever book club read!

If you would like to get involved with next month's BB Book Club check back here tomorrow where Anjali will be introducing her selection for February - we think you're going to love it! You can also sign up to our mailing list to make sure you don't miss out on any future book club updates.

Book Club | July 2020 Roundup

Our book club theme for July was 'books with maps' and there were so many great titles to choose from. Here are a few of the books Team BB read for the challenge...

View this post on Instagram

Our July book club theme is 'books with maps' and my pick was Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, which certainly didn't disappoint! Alternating between the perspectives of Zelie, Amari and Inan, this YA Fantasy book takes you on an action-packed adventure filled with many exciting and also heartbreaking moments. I really enjoyed the multiple perspectives and each character’s arc as well as the writing style, in particular the descriptions of the story’s setting. I've just started reading the sequel Children of Virtue and Vengeance and can't wait to find out what will happen next! - Erin Don't forget to share your July book club picks this week using #bloggersbookshelf 📚 ------------------- #bookclub #bookstagram #onlinebookclub #bookswithmaps #instabooks #bookbloggers #childrenofbloodandbone #yafantasy #yalit #beautifulbooks #bookswelove #currentlyreading #bookcovers

(I received this novel for review via Netgalley.) I had to try and create my own @cosyreads style cosy photo for this book! Our @bloggersbookshelf Book Club theme for this month is ‘a book with a map’, and The Ship of Shadows sure fits that bill! Following Aleja, a girl desperate for adventure, who accidentally finds herself part of a real pirate crew on a real magical ship, The Ship of Shadows is a joyful middle grade story, full of fun, friendship, and lots of cake! I don’t generally read a lot of middle grade fiction but I couldn’t resist this novel set on board a magical pirate ship, and I’m glad I didn’t! This novel is so much fun, I’d recommend it for anyone who spent their childhood with their head in books, dreaming of adventure! What are you currently reading? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the books that I added to my 'to be REread' book list at the start of the year was The Name of the Star, by Maureen Johnson. I read it years ago but never got around to reading the rest of the series, even though I really enjoyed it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Also, the @bloggersbookshelf Book Club theme for July is 'a book with a map in it' (which this one does), so it's the perfect time to re-read! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, tell me: what are you reading this week? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ---------- ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #thenameofthestar #nzcontentcollective #yabookstagram #bookstagram #books #book #bookaholic #booksofinstagram #confessionsofabookaddict #bookaddict #bookworm #bookreview #booklover #instaread #readthisbook #fiction #ya #lblogger #lifestyleblogger #nzbloggers #bookworm #bibliophile #reader #igbooks #bookstack #amreading #bookphotography #whattoread #epicreads

Book Club | August 2020 Roundup

Our August book club prompt was to read books with sunshine or clouds on the cover. Here's a couple of updates from Team BB...

View this post on Instagram

My pick for the August book club theme - a book with clouds or sunshine on the cover - is A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness! I've been meaning to read this book for YEARS, but am only just picking it up now. Are you joining us for the August Book Club? The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

"Tackling some difficult topics, The Great Alone is a heartbreaking story of survival set in the Alaskan wilderness in the 1970s-1980s. I found the Alaskan setting to be really interesting and atmospheric, almost like it's own character within the story. I also really liked the fact that the book took place over a decade or so, sharing the main character Leni's journey from a teenager to a young adult."

Book Club | March 2020 Roundup

March has been a strange month for us all but we hope you are all staying safe at home with a big stack of books for company. Our book club theme was 'books about siblings' and there were so many great titles to choose from. Here are a few of the books our little community picked up...

We’re reading books about siblings for the @bloggersbookshelf Book Club this month. My Sister, the Serial Killer is about Korede and her difficult relationship with her sister Ayoola, who, as well as being more beautiful and popular than Korede, also happens to have a habit of killing her boyfriends. This is an interesting premise and a fast read, easy to devour in just a few hours. It feels a little strange to say that a book about a serial killer is fun but Korede’s matter of fact narration, Ayoola’s unflappability, and the unique yet mundane relationship between the two sisters make for an extremely good time. - #vsco #vscocam #bloggersbookshelf #bookshelfbookclub #bookreview #bookstagram #vscobooks #bookworm #booklove #prettybooks #beautifulbooks #instabooks #bibliophile #igreads #booklover #mysistertheserialkiller #oyinkanbraithwaite #ebook #ereader #coolgirlsread #readeverywhere #readmorebooks #idratherbereading #cozyliving #bookaddict #cozyreading #literarylifestyle #readingbringsjoy
