Book Club | March 2020 Roundup

March has been a strange month for us all but we hope you are all staying safe at home with a big stack of books for company. Our book club theme was 'books about siblings' and there were so many great titles to choose from. Here are a few of the books our little community picked up...

We’re reading books about siblings for the @bloggersbookshelf Book Club this month. My Sister, the Serial Killer is about Korede and her difficult relationship with her sister Ayoola, who, as well as being more beautiful and popular than Korede, also happens to have a habit of killing her boyfriends. This is an interesting premise and a fast read, easy to devour in just a few hours. It feels a little strange to say that a book about a serial killer is fun but Korede’s matter of fact narration, Ayoola’s unflappability, and the unique yet mundane relationship between the two sisters make for an extremely good time. - #vsco #vscocam #bloggersbookshelf #bookshelfbookclub #bookreview #bookstagram #vscobooks #bookworm #booklove #prettybooks #beautifulbooks #instabooks #bibliophile #igreads #booklover #mysistertheserialkiller #oyinkanbraithwaite #ebook #ereader #coolgirlsread #readeverywhere #readmorebooks #idratherbereading #cozyliving #bookaddict #cozyreading #literarylifestyle #readingbringsjoy

Features | February Reads

Let's pretend I'm not sharing this roundup a few weeks late... Similarly to January, February was another good reading month with 10 more titles crossed off my TBR, including seven 4-star ratings. So far 2020 has been pretty kind to me reading-wise!

Several of the books I picked up in February have received a lot of praise in the blogging and bookstagram communities over the last few months, including The Silent Patient (Alex Michaelides), Such A Fun Age (Kiley Reid) and American Royals (Katharine McGee) - all of which I'm glad I read. American Royals was defintiely the biggest surprise of the month as it's not really a title I would usually have gone for but I just couldn't honestly rate it less than 4 stars as it was such an entertaining book. I think the fact I opted for the audiobook format really helped too!

I also thoroughly enjoyed my February book club selection for 'a book with a tree or leaf on the cover' which was A Place For Us (Fatima Farheen Mirza) and would definitely recommend picking up a copy.

As you can see from this month's roundup above, another favourite from February was The Interestings (Meg Wolitzer). I also gave 4-star ratings to On The Come Up (Angie Thomas) and the audiobook versions of Harry Potter; both The Chamber Of Secrets and The Goblet Of Fire.

Features | A Change To Ratings In 2020

I mentioned in previous post that have decided to experiment with making a change to how I rate books in 2020. For years now I have used the Goodreads system (1 = star did not like it, 2 stars = it was ok, 3 stars = liked it, 4 stars = really liked it and 5 stars = it was amazing) and rate books based on the overall reading experience.

In the past I have defintiely been amongst the Goodreads users who are frustrated that half star ratings aren't avaialble on the platform, but have continued to use these on my yearly reading spreadsheet as well as in past reviews here on BB. A 3.5 star rating, for books sitting somewhere between 'I liked it' and 'I really liked it' have always been a particular favourite of mine, but this year I've decided it's time to try sticking to round numbers, meaning those usual 3.5s will have to either be rounded up or down.

We're two months into the year and so far, adapting to full star ratings hasn't been as much of a challenge as I thought it would be. At the time of writing this post I've read 20 books and have only questioned whether to round a rating up or down for 4 of them; of course it was that tricky 3 or 4 debate every time!

What are your thoughts on half-star ratings?

Book Club | March 2020 - A Book About Siblings

For our 2020 BB Book Club we've put together another printable list of twelve different prompts, one for each month of the year. Just as we did in 2019, on the 1st day of each month we'll be introducing you to the month's prompt and the books team members each plan to read, along with some other suggested reads we think you'll love. Of course, these are just ideas so please feel free to interpret the prompts however you wish!

We're also inviting you to share photos and mini reviews of your book club picks on social media using #bloggersbookshelf or tag @bloggersbookshelf on Instagram.

Our prompt for March is...

A Book About Siblings

What we'll be reading...

Erin's pick: The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo

"This book has been on my radar (and my library reservations list) for a while now and I'm excited to finally read it. If over 17,000 4-5 star ratings on Goodreads is anything to go by, it's going to be a great read!"

Anjali's Pick: The Fowl Twins by Eoin Colfer

"This book came out last year, and I haven't read it yet. Eek! If you're familiar with the Atemis Fowl series, then this book follows Artemis' twin brothers on an adventure. To be honest, I don't really know what it's about more than that, but I'm looking forward to reading it!"

Ria's Pick: Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott

"My pick this month is another re-read of one of my favourites, which is one of the most quintessential books about siblings too! I'm really excited to re-read Little Women again, especially having watched the fantastic Greta Gerwig adaptation recently."

Other suggested reads...

- The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
- This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel
- Far From The Tree by Robin Benway (review)
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (review)
- My Sister The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
- Summer Of Salt by Katrina Leno
- Save The Date by Morgan Matson
- American Royals by Katharine McGee
- A Place For Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza
- The Lying Game by Sara Shepard (review)
